A new Leaderboard Report from Navigant Research examines the strategy and execution of 16 leading smart city suppliers, including vendor profiles, ratings, and rankings, with the goal of providing industry participants with an objective assessment of these companies’ relative strengths and weaknesses in the growing global smart city market.
Expected to be worth more than $27bn annually by 2023, the smart city technology market is characterised by a diverse range of suppliers spanning multiple sectors. The concept of the smart city covers a wide range of communities and governance models ranging from megacity regions to small towns and from historic urban centers to greenfield developments. According to a new Leaderboard report from Navigant Research, IBM and Cisco now lead the smart city market in terms of strategy and execution.
“Efforts to make cities smarter, more livable, and cleaner continue to grow, driven by a range of social, economic, and technological developments that are having an impact on cities around the world,” says Eric Woods, research director with Navigant Research. “Cities are seeking partners and suppliers to collaborate on ambitious programms for sustainability, innovation in public services, and economic development that depend on significant technology investments.”
IBM continues to combine a pragmatic approach to city engagement with its development of smart city platform solutions, while Cisco’s partner network provides an important source of innovation in the market. Competition in this market is rising, as cities look to deepen their supplier relationships and plan for larger-scale programms and deployments. Schneider Electric, which, according to the Leaderboard, leads the group of contenders to IBM and Cisco, has significantly upped the tempo of its smart city strategy, while Microsoft made the biggest jump in the ratings from the 2013 Smart City Leaderboard, thanks to the launch of its CityNext programme.
