Using Big Data to get a visit from the Stork

I remember reading an article where a number of Hollywood actors talked about how uneventful and boring love scenes were in movies. At first glance, the average person shakes their head….I mean, how bad can making out with Brad Pitt or Kate Upton be? Well, when you realise that dozens of people are watching, the entire thing is orchestrated and constantly interrupted and there is a microphone a few inches from your face, I can see what they mean.

For any couple that has tried to conceive a baby, the experience can be shockingly similar.

From taking temperatures more often than a hypochondriac, to worry about various cycles to having to work around a very aggressive schedule, trying to conceive a baby often takes much of the romance out of it.

Perhaps using Big Data can help to automate some of these things for you, says,  Larry Bellehumeur, M2M / IoT Consultant at Novotech Technologies.

Fertility is difficult to predict

Knowing when the optimal time for conceiving a child has a lot of science to it.  One has to watch where the female is in her cycle, what her temperature may be and any changes to her body that may make it more likely to achieve conception.  Since most of this involves taking pieces of data and analysing it, it only makes sense that Big Data can help.  Like any application, the better (or more accurate) the data, the better the ability to achieve accurate results.  In this way, different applications look for different signals, so not every applications works well for everyone.

When even temperature is not enough

As a father of two, I remember seeing my wife taking her temperature quite often when we were trying to have our children.  In fact, she was taking it so often that I thought she had started smoking one of those e-cigarettes…However, taking your temperature manually is not always the most accurate method for some women.

This is where Bluetooth enabled cervical rings come into play….no, I am not kidding.  Companies like Prima-Temp use this technology to take regular temperature readings to provide a much more accurate historical base…..by having a better idea what the average temperature is to know when a slight change is actually a change and not caused by another factor.  I did find it funny, as an FYI, that our friends at CNET called it “a Fitbit for your ovaries”.

The Bottom line

As couples are marrying later in life, it is becoming more common for couples to struggle while conceiving children.  It is good to see that IoT solutions are allowing couples to better use information to increase their chances.  Also, by using automation, it may help to take some of the stress from the situation to make it more comfortable for couples.
